CengCen is your best pet nanny, accompany with your fur-kids while you are not at home. It is an indoor pet monitor launched by LM Intelligence Tech Ltd. in 2019. It has a wide-angle camera, two-way audio and treats launcher that could be remote-controlled. Through CengCen, you can interact with your furkids wherever you are.
CHALLENGE
Separation anxiety is a common issue for pet owners and their fur-kids. Household monitoring cameras allow owners to see their pets remotely, yet the one-way video doesn't solve the anxiety problem from the pets' side. Pet monitors and treat dispensers in the current market seem good solutions for this situation. However, the expensive price around $1400 Chinese Yuan/ $200 US Dollar is way beyond the budget of many pet owners.
DESIGN SOLUTION
CengCen smart pet monitor targets pet owners who have a busy lifestyle in China. With audiovisual interaction and treats tossing function, CengCen alleviates separation anxiety at a more affordable price.

High fidelity microphone with noise-canceling function makes you feel like face-to-face interaction with your pets at home.
TREAT TOSSING
You can launch treats as a distraction for your pets' anxious. The treat tossing could be functioned as a reward for your fur-kids stop pacing, licking or barking as well. CengCen could be placed on a table or mounted on a wall to avoid pets hitting the device.
HEALTHY TREATING
Unlike automatic pet feeders that provide a full meal each time, CengCen dispenses 3 to 5 pieces of treats on one trigger, and 3 times a day at max. You can treat and interact with your loving pets more often, keep them healthy, and avoid becoming overweight.

UX ANALYSIS
Real-time monitoring mode
Real-time monitoring mode is the high-traffic screen of the CengCen app. While using the app, users spend most of the time on this screen to attract pets with their own voice, see their loving fur-kids through the camera head in real-time, and toss treats to reward them or calm them down.
TASK 01
Main menu bar - To keep the menu bar fixed on the bottom screen or not

CON
Solution
Have fixed menu bar on the screens of the first level to able users to switch in between the main feature screens quickly, yet have a simple operation screen while on the real-time monitoring mode or on other specific tasks.
TASK 02
Camera-related functions - Separating the photo-shooting and video-taking function as two buttons, or integrating them as one button
Separated
Listing out all the functions separately to let users know what functions are accessible on the real-time monitoring mode.
Integrated
Users could access the two functions at the same time.
Solution
Capturing the best shot of pets isn't an easy task. The integrated camera function button would let users not miss out on any of the actions of their fur babies. Pet owners could take screen shots by clicking the camera button or long-pressing the button to video shooting the whole action.
Separated - Photo-shooting and video-taking functions
Integrated - Camera function
TASK 03
Hierarchy of the functions - Emphasizing the "key" feature - treats tossing
More treats owners give to their pets, more treats they would purchase from CengCen. Therefore, for the business point of view, emphasizing the treats tossing button to encourage pet owners to use it yet with the limitation to prevent pet obesity is one of the main tasks for UXUI design.
I have tried different approaches to solve this task:
- Making the type and icon larger and bold
- Circling the button
- Increasing the shadow
