PERSONAL PROJECT

LUNA

LUNA is a female health APP provides personal workout plan based on users' menstrual cycles. Through LUNA, users can ease their PMS symptoms, increase their workout effectiveness, and keep in healthy and confident.

CHALLENGE

Period tracking and fitness/wellness are the top two themes of female health APPs, and most of the APPs treat the themes as separated subjects. However, they missed out the fact this monthly female hormone cycle is not only linked to women's period and moods, but also related to metabolism closely, which strongly connected with result of exercise. On the other hand, doing moderate exercise regularly is the key to ease the PMS symptoms.

LUNA is an APP integrates menstrual cycle tracking, fitness and wellness for female, which assists users reach their body goals in the healthy way effectively.

Based on users' ideal body goals and their PMS symptoms, LUNA provides exercise plan to users during each phases (menstrual, follicular, ovulation, and luteal phase) of a menstrual cycle, which help  build healthy body forms and ease their symptoms at the same time.

WHAT DOES LUNA BRING TO US?

EFFECTIVE

Encouraging users to do certain exercise during certain phase to maximize the effects.

EASY

Creating an easy access system that encourages users to record data constantly.

CONSEQUENT

Connecting the symptoms with menstrual cycles to help users to see the patterns.

SELF-LOVING

Let women love themselves more by understanding their bodies and treat their bodies better.

RESEARCH

To define users' pain points and build a more realistic user's story, I interviewed with 10 females around 25 to 35 years old who have experienced PMS symptoms.

6/10 are using period tracking APPs, 2/10 record their menstrual cycle in their own methods, and 2/10 don't really track their periods. On the other side, 4/10 do workout at gyms as a daily routine, 2/10 exercise regularly by following instruction on APPs/ Internet.  3/10 do various types of exercise two to three times per month, and only one person doesn't do any exercise.

PAIN POINTS

01

How to provide users an accessible and motivating APP.

Workout could be exhausted, yet maintaining workout as a routine is way more challenging, same as documenting the data of body conduction everyday.

02

How to recommend users suitable workout plans based on their status.

"I feel like I shouldn't exercise during my period, so I stopped. (keeping up with the original exercise plan) " An interviewee said. I have been heard many similar stories from friends that they stopped executing their workout plan during the period due to PMS, yet they still suffered from the symptoms. In fact, doing moderate exercise regularly is the key to ease the PMS symptoms.

03

How to allow users to filter and sort data easily to receive the information that they want to have.

Information is powerful, but Information overload is tiring. Showing tons of workout options and data at once makes users confused and probably want to give up even before starting exercise, especially for beginners who haven't explored their body strength.

DESIGN DECISIONS

01

To make LUNA an easy operating APP, I reduced the number of manual input fields to minimize users' typing effort. The buttons are placed following Fitt’s law. With the progression of the steps to be selected are given in the accessible points.

02

The line chart shows the change of users' body constitution, and the color background shows different phases of users' menstrual cycle. Users can see their achievements easily and understand that it's natural to have some lag phases during their body building process due to this monthly hormone-changing cycle.

03

The daily exercise recommendation is varied based on each user's body building goal, period cycle, and body condition. The enlarged exercise block for the daily exercise garbs users' attention, and they can set up filter to view specific plans.

04

Considering users will view the pages while doing exercise, I increased the legibility by enlarging text and image, and highlighting the key information in the circle. The back option is given even at the last screen where it can be identified by the user easily.

05

Users can review in weekly format to see detailed daily data, and filter information to view certain data. While viewing in monthly or yearly scale, it shows less and less data, which helps users to see the pattern of their period without overwhelming by minor information.

TAKEAWAYS

The personal project was really motivating for me to increase the awareness for women being less confidence about themselves and forgot how powerful and beautiful they actually are. I would love to work on more subjects that deliver positive messages in the near future.
