Pingo is your solo-traveling partner to regain a vanished art of “getting lost” in which demassify your standardized traveling experience. It is a compass with display, only indicates a distance and name of your destination previously pinned or being shared. MILLENNIALS LOVE HITTING THE ROAD SOLO
MILLENNIALS IN MOTION
200 million travelers are Millennials, and this demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue.
EXPECTING A SENSE OF ADVENTURE
More than 50% of Millennial travelers expect a sense of adventure while they travel by themselves.
WHAT DO SOLO-TRAVELERS REALLY WANT?
FREEDOM
LESS PREP TIME
GLANCE-ABLE GUIDANCE
BEING LESS TOURISTY
THE GEM OF SOLO-TRAVELING IS...
The sense of getting lost during their journey brings the joy of unexpected positive surprises which make the trip more psychologically memorable and precious.
BUT THE PROBLEM IS...
Most of Millennials travel with smart phones with generalized traveling suggestions.
WHAT IF...
What if we can be freed from distracted, information-saturated times to discover what it means to travel authentically.
THE NEW SOLO-TRAVELING EXPERIENCE
our mission is to create a product/system that brings back this lost beauty of getting lost that was buried under advanced navigation system constantly in our hands.
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
CHALLENGE IN RESEARCH
During this project, we couldn’t have the opportunity and resource of following Millennial travelers while they are traveling overseas for field research. Instead, we gained the insights from phone interviewing expert solo travelers, and also observed foreign travelers who came to visit our city.
We interviewed 14 Millennial solo travelers in total, and 3 experts who have 5+ years solo traveling experience.
USER SCENARIO/ MOCK-UP TESTING
Through 4 rounds of user scenario development and mock-ups testing, we finalized the concept of Pingo, your solo traveling partner to regain a lost art of “getting lost” in which demassify your standardized traveling experience.

The Pingo system has three major features for travelers to make a memorable journey: open guidance with short prep time, traveling by public transportation, and favorite location pining.
FEATURE 1
OPEN GUIDANCE WITH SHORT PREP TIME
Travelers browse their interested categories and places that they preset on the Pingo website.
The compass provides the direction and the distance to the destination where users selected. It allows the travelers define their own path to get to the place.
The system provides destination suggestions to the users based on their preference if they don't have many location options in their pin list.
FEATURE 2
TRAVELING BY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
The compass suggests users traveling by public transport when the destination is farther than a certain distance from the current location based on users' setting.
The compass provides the way to the public transport station and the ETA of the next bus/train, so travelers can keep their schedule on track.
The compass shows how many stops left towards to the destination and the information about the next stop when users on the bus/train.
FEATURE 3
FAVORITE LOCATION PINING
The compass has a button on the top to pin travelers' favorite location any time during the trip in one step.
The pins will show up on the compass next time when users browse through the categories that the pins belong to.
These stored pins are shared on the Pingo platform to inspire other travelers, which builds an unique community that suits Millennials' social persona.

INTERFACE
To make the interface glance-able, the most important information is large and on the center with minimal color indication. The straightforward icon design ables users to know what category the icon stands for quickly.
HARDWARE
Inspired by the aesthetic of traditional compass, we kept the analog compass needle to indicate directions enhancing a sense of authenticity.
